NICK
I was born with pulmonic stenosis, which meant I needed heart surgery just a few short weeks into life. Since then, I’ve lived with a heart murmur that’s been closely followed with annual or biannual checkups.
Growing up, I got used to the echocardiograms and never thought much of them. I lived a very normal, active life. I played every sport I could, and when I got to high school, I focused on baseball. At one point, my cardiologist told me to avoid caffeine for a while—advice I mostly followed… until college.
I went on to play Division II baseball at the University of Southern Indiana. Even through strength training and intense conditioning, I never experienced any major issues. Honestly, I believe sports and staying active have helped me live the full, healthy life I have today.
I know some kids with heart conditions are told to avoid sports for safety reasons—but I truly believe that, with close monitoring and good care, staying active can be a game-changer. It helped me grow up with confidence and a sense of normalcy.
Today, I still follow regularly with my adult cardiologist here in St. Louis. My most recent echo showed no changes—just another reminder to stay aware and keep listening to my body.
Living with a heart condition doesn’t define me. It’s simply part of my story—and one that’s shaped my strength, discipline, and determination.
