JAMES
James is a joyful 5-year-old who has already faced more challenges than many do in a lifetime. His journey began before he was even born. At a 33-week growth scan, his parents learned he had hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a diagnosis that left them devastated, confused, and worried about what his future might hold.
James had his first open-heart surgery at just eight days old, his second at five months, and his third the Fontan at four years old. In between, he endured numerous procedures, including heart catheterizations and the placement of a feeding tube because he struggled to eat and gain weight during the critical interstage period.
After his Fontan surgery, James faced severe complications, including lymphatic failure. His care was transferred to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where a procedure meant to support his lymphatic system led to even more serious complications. His body became overwhelmed by inflammation, with clots forming throughout even in his heart. His family came terrifyingly close to losing him.
But James fought back. He showed everyone that he is, without question, a warrior stronger than the condition he lives with every day.
Today, at almost 5½, James is thriving. He is a proud kindergartener who loves music, Paw Patrol, Frozen, puzzles, and coloring. He adores exploring new places and has a special passion for maps he can navigate anywhere on Google Maps from his iPad!
James will live with congenital heart disease for life, and no one knows exactly how his story will unfold. But his family is making every moment count—helping him live fully, joyfully, and bravely, just as he has since the day he was born.
