EMMANUEL
When I was in elementary school, I thought strep throat was just something you took antibiotics for and moved on from. But even after I finished my medicine, my body didn’t get the message — it started attacking itself. Weeks of joint pain and other strange symptoms led to a diagnosis I’d never heard of before: rheumatic heart disease (RHD).
In February 2022, I had open heart surgery to repair my valves. The surgery helped, but my heart still carries the scars of RHD, and now I’m fighting every day to avoid heart failure. Some days are hard, but I don’t let my limited heart function stop me from chasing my dreams.
I recently completed my Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course, passed the exam, and I’m on track to graduate early from high school in 2025. My next goal? To step into the medical field so I can care for others the way so many have cared for me.
Rheumatic heart disease is preventable — yet it still changes and ends lives around the world. My hope is that by sharing my story, more people will learn about RHD and the importance of early detection and treatment for strep throat.
I am Emmanuel. I am a future healthcare professional. And I am a Heart Warrior.
