ABOUT
At Ollie Hinkle Heart Foundation (OHHF), we believe courage is born from vulnerability. The heart community can reclaim the word “Heart Warrior” by reframing it positively and reversing the stigmatization.
While “Heart Warrior” is generally known to convey strength and resilience, potential criticisms associated with its usage and definition include:
- Pressure and Expectations: The term pressures individuals with heart conditions to constantly exhibit strength and bravery. This can create unrealistic expectations and make it difficult for individuals to express vulnerability or seek support when needed.
- Language: The use of terms like “warrior” and “battle” connotes that one chooses to enter battle, such as military personnel, when individuals with CHD do not choose their battle with CHD. Warriors in battle have armor and weapons, while Heart Warriors must create invisible armor to protect themselves. This language does not fully capture the lifelong, non-linear nature of health journeys, medical trauma, and recovery.
- Stigmatization of Vulnerability: The emphasis on being a “warrior” inadvertently stigmatizes vulnerability or moments of struggle. Individuals might feel reluctant to openly share their challenges for fear of failing to meet the perceived expectation of strength.
- Inclusion: The term may not capture the diverse experiences within the Heart community. Some may feel it needs to represent their unique journey or cultural perspectives adequately.
It’s crucial to approach the language used to describe individuals with heart conditions with sensitivity and awareness, recognizing that each person’s experience is unique and their preferences for terminology may vary.
OHHF hopes this new definition helps our community collectively change the narrative. Thank you for helping OHHF recognize the coexistence of bravery and vulnerability by what it means to be a Heart Warrior. This definition acknowledges the power of vulnerability as an integral part of the human experience and the journey of what it means to be an individual living with a heart condition they were born with or developed as a child.
HEART WARRIOR
/heart war•ri•or/ noun
Heart Warriors dare to drop the armor that protects them from feeling vulnerable, embracing their lifelong heart condition to bring purpose and meaning to their lives. They know that they are so much more than the diagnosis given to them. They own their story and are seen for their ability to be brave and resilient when they cannot control the outcome. Their courage is born from their vulnerability to ask for help and support when needed.
