NOAH
Noah Daniel Keen was born on March 20, 2020, with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) with a restrictive atrial septum. HLHS is a congenital heart defect that occurs when the left side of the heart does not develop normally and requires a minimum of three open heart surgeries during the first several years of life.
After birth, Noah was emergently intubated and was taken straight to the Cath Lab to open the restrictive atrial septum to keep him stable until he could undergo his first open heart surgery. On March 25, 2020, at five days old, Noah underwent his first twelve-hour open heart surgery (Norwood procedure). Since the heart’s left side does not pump well, the heart is rebuilt, and the right side of the heart becomes the main pumping chamber. After the Norwood, the right ventricle pumps blood to the lungs and the body.
Noah received his second open heart surgery (Glenn) at four months old, allowing his blood to move from the upper part of the body (the head, neck, and arms) directly to the lungs, allowing the blood to pick up oxygen without passing through the heart.
At nine months old, Noah finally came home to be with his siblings for the first time, but not long after, he developed a clot in his aorta and was re-admitted to the hospital. As his healthcare team determined how to treat the clot best, Noah had a heart attack as his clot dislodged and went into his aorta. He slowly recovered and was able to go home and eventually start preschool.
Unfortunately, on March 29, 2024, Noah had to be life-flighted back to the hospital due to new onset heart failure. His parents received the news that he would need a heart transplant. On June 25, 2024, Noah had to undergo another life-saving open heart surgery as his heart started to skip beats, and his other organs started failing due to lack of oxygen. His heart surgeon repaired Noah’s aorta valve and placed him on a ventricular assistive device (VAD) to bridge him to a heart transplant.
As of today, Noah is still in the hospital and will remain on the VAD while waiting for his perfect heart. You may follow Noah’s journey on the #NoahStrong Facebook page.
