GABE
Meet Gabriel, a remarkable 2-year-old with a truly unique journey. At just 19 weeks, his family discovered his complex congenital heart defect, unlike any other—double outlet right ventricle (DORV), small right dominant ventricle, left pulmonary artery stenosis, interrupted inferior vena cava, atrioventricular valve regurgitation, and more.
Gabriel is not only a heart warrior but also navigates life with Heterotaxy. This condition places his heart at a different angle and flips his midline, affecting his liver, spleen, and bowel rotation. His entrance into the world was a challenging one, marked by a traumatic birth at 1:45 am. Weighing 6 pounds and 3 ounces, our lucky number 4 arrived quietly. Within 12 minutes, he faced a code blue situation, but the medical team swiftly intervened, initiating his incredible fight for life. Despite the odds, he woke up, defying expectations.
Gabriel’s resilience persisted through multiple challenges, including a diagnosis of atrioventricular valve regurgitation (AVVR) that initially posed doubts about surgical options. Placed on the transplant list twice and experienced necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) twice due to his bowel malrotation, he overcame each hurdle to defy the odds. Our journey continues at home, where our primary goal is to nurture him, focusing on feeding and growth. Despite facing numerous setbacks and delayed surgery dates, Gabriel’s strength shone through. On February 23, 2023, he underwent his first open-heart surgery. While there were a few setbacks, overall, Gabriel exhibited incredible strength and resilience. Today, Gabriel relishes life at home, steadily gaining weight in preparation for the next chapter in his remarkable journey.
