From Love and Loss to Building a Legacy
I loaded as many bags as I could carry into my arms and used my foot to nudge the car door shut. Each bag was filled with carefully chosen goodies for children and parents in the heart center—stuffed animals, food delivery gift cards, activity books, lip balm, and cozy blankets.
As I walked into Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, a wave of emotion hit me. I wasn’t sure I was ready to face the memories, but today felt different. When the nurses saw me, they said, “We know you! You’re Ollie’s mom.” Their words sent a wave of comfort through me. They remembered him—and that memory continues to fuel my work.
The Reality of the CICU: Parenting Through Uncertainty
Ollie’s journey through congenital heart disease (CHD) included multiple open-heart surgeries, time on a ventilator, and the terrifying moment every CICU parent dreads: a code called on their child. I watched helplessly as doctors and nurses performed CPR on my tiny son.
Eventually, they placed him on ECMO, a life support machine to rest his heart and lungs after cardiac arrest. For a moment, we had hope that he might recover. But days later, further tests confirmed what no parent ever wants to hear: complete brain and brain stem damage.
The cardiac ICU (CICU) is a place of miracles and heartbreak, where families discover strength they never asked for. For us, it became the setting where we faced both hope and devastation, light and darkness, all at once.
Finding Strength in Community and Faith
In those darkest days, our family was carried by community. Friends and loved ones brought meals, cared for Maddie, and filled our home with love. Even in grief, we were surrounded by light—reminders that we were not alone.
The chapel became a sacred place for us. One day, a priest’s words reminded me of the unbreakable bond between a mother and son, and the love that carries us through impossible moments. Later, as Ollie’s life came to an end, a ray of light pierced the stained-glass window—a painful and beautiful reminder that even in heartbreak, hope and peace can break through.
Transforming Grief Into Purpose
Leaving the hospital without Ollie was the hardest step of our lives. But over time, we found a way to embrace the pain as a measure of our love for him. We asked ourselves: Could there be a purpose within this pain?
The answer was yes.
Through the work of the Ollie Hinkle Heart Foundation (OHHF), we’ve transformed grief into a force for good. In twelve years, we’ve raised nearly $10 million to provide financial assistance, barrier-free mental health support, and education for more than 9,000 heart families. Ollie’s story continues to inspire hope, love, and healing for children battling pediatric heart disease and their families.
Ollie’s Legacy Lives On
Ollie lives on. Love lives on. Hope and light are all around us, even in our darkest times. His legacy is not just about what we’ve built—it’s about every family we walk alongside, every child whose story matters, and every moment of healing that emerges from unimaginable loss.
